Abstract
Abstract
The skatepark in my hometown of Riverhead, New York has been here since the early two
thousand's. It has served as a place for skateboarders to congregate and practice their passion for
many years. This I know, it is more like a second home to me at this point. Skateparks offer
many things to all people from different walks of life. To some, they offer a safe haven, to others
they offer an outlet for meditation. One thing to note is the various subcultures that lie within the
skateparks. The goal of this writing is to uncover and shine light on those subcultures that exist
beyond the spectators' eyes. In fact, skateboarding, BMX, and inline skating all have their own
cultures with their own customs and values. Each culture has their own language and ideals that
can even be seen as similarities to the others.
