| dc.description.abstract | Veterans and their families are inundated with resources with little to no guidance. While a centralized directory of basic resources from each state exists on the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (U.S. DVA) website, there is no comprehensive and centralized Veteran resource directory for the state of New York. This paper attempts to identify what barriers have prevented the development of such a resource in New York by reviewing other state’s attempts at creating a similar resource such as Massachusetts and how the integration of activity theory and common identity theory can be utilized in the creation of a centralized resource directory. It will also evaluate the role the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs (NYS DVA) can play in housing, maintaining and collaborating with Veteran Service Organizations, nonprofits and private sector partners to create a successful Veterans resource directory for New York. The creation of a mockup to demonstrate the incorporation of the knowledge gained is also presented as a part of this proposal. | en_US |

Generational welcomes: comparing the reintegration of Vietnam Veterans and Iraq VeteransVietnam veterans went through an imperfect reintegration experience while they were readjusting to living in civilian society after their service. They would receive estrangement from society due to their connection to the war, experience high unemployment levels, struggle with the VA in securing medical care and benefits, and many would deal with post-traumatic stress disorder. The harsh nature of Vietnam veterans readjusting to society would be acknowledged with the construction of the Vietnam War Memorial, leading to veterans’ well-being becoming a top priority. America would enter another large scale conflict in 2003 with the Iraq War. After that war ended, Iraq veterans would attempt to reintegrate back into society. Because of the experiences of their predecessors, Iraq veterans would not experience the same estrangement from society and were prioritized in federal hiring practices. But they would also struggle with the Department of Veteran Affairs securing medical help and dealing with another combat induced affliction called Traumatic Brain Injuries. Linkage of chromosome 13q32 to schizophrenia in a large veterans affairs cooperative study sampleSeveral prior reports have suggested that chromosomal region 13q32 may harbor a schizophrenia susceptibility gene. In an attempt to replicate this finding, we assessed linkage between chromosome 13 markers and schizophrenia in 166 families, each with two or more affected members. The families, assembled from multiple centers by the Department of Veterans Affairs Cooperative Studies Program, included 392 sampled affected subjects and 216 affected sib pairs. By DSM-III-R criteria, 360 subjects (91.8%) had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and 32 (8.2%) were classified as schizoaffective disorder, depressed. The families had mixed ethnic backgrounds. The majority were northern European-American families (n = 62, 37%), but a substantial proportion were African-American kindreds (n = 60, 36%). Chromosome 13 markers, spaced at intervals of approximately 10 cM over the entire chromosome and 2-5 cM for the 13q32 region were genotyped and the data analyzed using semi-parametric affected only linkage analysis. For the combined sample (with race broadly defined and schizophrenia narrowly defined) the maximum LOD score was 1.43 (Z-score of 2.57; P = 0.01) at 79.0 cM between markers D13S1241 (76.3 cM) and D13S159 (79.5 cM). Both ethnic groups showed a peak in this region. The peak is within 3 cM of the peak reported by Brzustowicz et al.

Veteran Teachers’ Perception of Changes over Time in the KindergartenThe purpose of this study was to investigate and document the changes that kindergarten teachers have seen take place in kindergarten and to record kindergarten teachers' opinions of these changes. A pilot study was conducted to narrow down the changes that have taken place in kindergarten. Three kindergarten teachers with various years of teaching kindergarten were used. Ten common threads of commentary were chosen and used as the basis for the actual study. Seventeen kindergarten teachers with nine or more years of teaching experience in kindergarten were the subjects. All seventeen kindergarten teachers were personally interviewed by the same researcher in the Rochester, New York area. The kindergarten teachers were from urban, suburban and rural public school systems.
