AbstractThis project seeks to determine the most important characteristics in effective tutorial development. The findings from previous research of related studies provided direction regarding the design and production of solid modeling tutorials using screencapture with voiceover. Related studies were retrieved in an electronic database using the following keywords: tutorial design, improving spatial conceptualization, solid modeling tutorials, CAD tutorials, effective tutorials, and creating tutorials. Since the development of tutorials is completed via the use of ever-improving technology, the results of the search were then narrowed by the date published, rejecting anything regarding the development of tutorials dated before the year 2000. Theoretical references were not subject to this date filter. Tutorial prototypes were created using Google Sketch Up Pro, Power Point, and Camtasia II for Mac. Prototypes were designed using information from previous studies as well as guidance from Human Centered Design and Interaction theories. The resulting models were assessed using Bloom’s Taxonomy to attest to their potential value in the classroom. The final series of Google Sketch Up Pro tutorials is intended for use in a technical drawing introduction unit in middle school Technology Education classes. The objectives of the tutorials are to promote higher level thinking order and ultimately help students acquire spatial conceptualization skills in regard to technical drawing of 3D objects in 2D orthographic projection depictions. The hope is that the use of engaging tutorials will aid in bridging the gap between the 3D reality and the 2D drawing worlds.

Expanding the Classroom: Using Video Tutorials to Create Choices in the Elementary Art ClassroomPrestigiacomo, Floretta (2015-05-01)This paper will discuss the benefits of video tutorials, effective tutorial development techniques, video tutorial application, and personal applications and ideas for using video tutorials in an elementary art classroom. The research questions, how can video tutorials be used as an educational methodology in the elementary art curriculum to supplement a choice-based art program and what is the process of executing video tutorials in the elementary art classroom are examined. A video series prototype was created using IMovie for a 4th grade Native American art unit. Constructivist learning theory, anchored instruction and information-processing strategies guided the development of the unit. Creating the video series proved to be an extensive yet worthwhile experience. Employing video tutorials in the elementary art classroom may be valuable method of instruction that is paid for with an investment of time.

When users have trouble understanding or using the information, the design has failed its primary purpose (Katz 17). When a design has failed and cannot be adjusted, the logical next step is to create another design to assist in using the first design. Tutorials are the perfect opportunity to help fill the void in a failed design. With the assistance of video and/or screen sharing technology, designers can create guided step-by-step instruction to assist users in navigating a process. This paper will examine how video tutorials can fill the void in coherence and transparency left by a failed design, including methods for creating successful video tutorials and an examination of equipment necessary for recording.
The Motivational Effects of Using a Computer-Based Tutorial vs. a Traditional Instruction Method for Learning How to Use an Elementary Level Mathematics GameRoth, Christopher (2012-05-01)The purpose of this project was to develop and evaluate a computer-based tutorial to educate students on how to use an elementary level mathematics game. The emphasis of the tool was based on the cognitive learning principle of motivation, as described in Malone's motivation theory. The research explored the motivational effects of using the tutorial versus a traditional learning method, advantages and disadvantages to teachers and students, and improvements that could enhance the learning process. This qualitative case study employed post-testing, interviews, and referenced literary resources to collect and analyze data. Tutorial users scored ten percent higher on the post-test than the instruction sheet users. Advantages of the tutorial included user control, visual references, and assistance for learning disabilities. Disadvantages included loss of human interaction and the preparation and development process. Character development (fantasy), increased audio/video combinations, and more challenging elements were cited as areas for increasing motivation.
