This capstone project aims to support teachers who work with English language learners (ELLs) in mainstream classrooms. ELLs are a growing population and it is likely that teachers will have one or more ELLs in their class. A problem found with teaching of ELLs is that teachers do not feel that they receive the training and tools to do so. To ensure that teachers feel equipped to teach English language learners, this capstone project introduces scaffolding as a solution through the lens of Vygotsky's (1978) Zone of Proximal Development. Solutions to the problem are introduced through the concept that instruction of vocabulary leads to reading comprehension, and then in turn, leads to success across content areas. The research delves into the importance of strategy teaching when working with ELLs and the many methods that teachers can utilize within their own instruction.en_US
