| dc.description.abstract | Majority of juveniles within the US juvenile justice system suffer from mental health issues and labeling after incarceration which are mostly related to their recidivism (Baglivio et al., 2017; Lee et al., 2017). This paper identifies the psychological effects of the juvenile justice system on the offenders by focusing on the labeling theory. Furthermore, this paper explores the impact of labeling on juveniles’ preconceptions about themselves, and whether these preconceptions influence juveniles' recidivism rates. This paper uses meta-analysis of 20 empirical studies. Researchers suggest a reformation of juvenile justice policies, which address the issue of the length of stay and mental health outcomes of juvenile offenders who have been incarcerated (Gandelman et al., 2020; Gonzalez et al., 2017). In addition, positive appraisals, youth involvement in a community-based program, employment opportunities, and education could help reduce their recidivism by addressing juveniles' low self-esteem and low self-worth because of labeling (Abrams et al., 2011; Kroska et al., 2017; Miller et al., 2019). The results from this paper could help improve juvenile's mental health issues, combat social labeling on them, and reduce their recidivism rates. | en_US |

Growth, Survival, and Body Composition of Yellow Perch Juveniles Fed Commercial and Experimental DietsTwo experiments were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of commercial and experimental diets on the survival, growth, and body composition of juvenile yellow perch Perca flavescens. In both experiments, fish were fed by hand four to five times a day at a restricted ration of up to 90% satiation for 51 d. In experiment 1, fish (initial weight, 87 6 24 mg) were fed three experimental diets (F1, F2, and a casein–gelatin-based diet) and one commercial diet (Kyowa 400B). In experiment 2, fish (initial weight, 174 6 56 mg) were fed four experimental diets (Kyowa 400B, INVE-NRD, a starter diet from BioOregon, and a starter diet from Purina). In both experiments, the growth performance of yellow perch juveniles was significantly affected by dietary treatments. In experiment 1, fish fed Kyowa 400B and the casein–gelatinbased diet grew significantly faster than those fed the F1 and F2 diets. However, survival was significantly lower in fish fed the casein–gelatin-based diet than in those fed the other dietary treatments. In experiment 2, fish fed the INVE-NRD diet exhibited the best growth performance. Survival was not affected by dietary treatments. In both experiments, the proximate composition of fish among dietary treatments reflected the proximate composition of the diet. Our results indicate that satisfactory growth of yellow perch juveniles can be achieved using commercial and experimental diets.

The Potential of Pigeon Creek, San Salvador, Bahamas, as a Nursery Habitat for Juvenile Coral Reef FishThe government of the Bahamas is considering making parts of San Salvador a National Marine Park. This study was conducted to assess the significance of Pigeon Creek, a shallow tidal lagoon, as a nursery for coral reef fishes. The perimeter of Pigeon Creek is lined with mangrove and limestone bedrock. Depending on location in the Creek, the bottom is sand or seagrass and ranges in depth from shallow intertidal sand flats to deeper, tide-scoured channels with a maximum depth of 3 m. In June 2006 and January 2007, fish were counted and their reproductive status Juvenile or adult) was recorded by sampling a total of 112, 50-m transects along the perimeter of the lagoon. Excluding silversides (Atherinidae, 52% of the fish counted), of the remaining fish counted, six families each comprised >1% of the total abundance (parrotfishes, 35.3%; snappers, 23.9%; grunts, 21.0%; mojarras, 8.5%; damselfishes, 6.1%; wrasses, 2.4%). There were few differences in effort-adjusted counts among habitats (mangrove, bedrock, mixed), sections (North, Middle, and Southwest) and seasons (summer 2006 and winter 2007). Snappers, grunts and parrotfishes are important food fishes and significant families in terms of reef ecology around San Salvador. Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) which covered 68% of the perimeter of Pigeon Creek, and where 62% of the fish were counted, was an important habitat for snappers (Lutjanidae) and grunts (Haemulidae) but bedrock was the most important habitat for parrotfishes (Scaridae). The Southwest section of Pigeon Creek was important for snappers, grunts and parrotfishes, the North section for grunts and parrotfishes, and the Middle section for snappers. Only six juvenile Nassau grouper were counted in perimeter habitats, but 32 were counted during 33 minutes of drift sampling in the channel of the Southwest section of Pigeon Creek. Among the non silverside fish counted, 91.2% were juveniles. Although not part of this study, many juvenile Queen conch and juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster also were observed. These results suggest that Pigeon Creek is an important nursery for the coral reefs surrounding San Salvador, and should be protected from any disturbance caused by development or increased use of the area.

Interaction between dietary thiamine and lipid in juvenile steelhead troutThiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency has been negatively affecting salmonines in the Great Lakes region. This project investigated the hypothesis that thiamine deficiency in steelhead trout is a result of a high lipid diet due to thiamine being used up as an antioxidant to prevent lipid peroxidation. Juvenile steelhead trout were fed four diets (high lipid/thiamine, high lipid/no thiamine, low lipid/thiamine, and low lipid/no thiamine) in triplicate aquaria over a six-week period. Fish were sampled every two weeks to assess survival and growth, and samples were preserved for biochemical analysis. At week six, weight and lipid content of fish fed low lipid diets differed significantly from fish fed high lipid diets regardless of the presence or absence of dietary thiamine (P<0.05). Thiamine concentrations in fish fed the thiamine-containing diets were significantly higher than those fed thiamine deplete diet (P<0.05). Mortality was the highest in fish fed low lipid/no thiamine diet, followed by fish fed the low lipid/thiamine, high lipid/no thiamine, and then high lipid/thiamine diets. Finally, fish fed the high lipid/no thiamine diet began to exhibit symptoms of thiamine deficiency during week 4 of the experiment.
