    Abstract
This thesis project examines scholarly work on the Black Plague and considers its import on history from an historian’s perspective. The second section explores the modern epidemic, AIDS, as a similar historical event and discusses the modern day response and effect of this “plague.” The third section of the project offers a global history lesson plan based on the central idea that current events guide our understanding of historical moments utilizing the theme magazine method. The year-long instructional package focuses on foundational lessons that teach historical analysis and understanding of primary and secondary sources, strategies for historical document analysis, and development of critical thinking skills.
