Supporting Kindergartners’ Writing Development Through the Use of Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study: A Self Study Lora Bower Candidate for Master of Science in Education The College at Brockport, State University of new York, 2014 Abstract This self-study is my attempt to determine how I could use Lucy Calkins Units of Study writing curriculum to support my kindergarten students’ writing development. I conducted the research over a five-week period. Each day, I read the lesson in the Units of Study curriculum and decided which components I needed to modify so my students would find success as writers. My data collection included a summary of the daily lesson and a reflection upon my instructional decisions. As a result of my research, I concluded that I could support my students’ writing development by crafting and modifying the mini lessons and conference topics, extending the time frame of specific lessons, assuming a more indirect role, and setting high expectations.
