This study was designed to determine the common characteristics of adult avid readers, find out what through their lifetime has made them avid readers and how they have been influenced. Forty-four adult avid readers completed a researcher-developed survey. The responses from the surveys were reviewed and appropriate qualitative and quantitative analyses were made. The findings from this study indicated that there were common characteristics and influences among the survey respondents. These commonalities included that most respondents read for similar reasons, most became avid readers as young children, most were influenced by parents or other close relatives or teachers, and most had exposure to or access to reading materials as children.
