In 2012, for the first time, the United States issued a set of national standards for Mathematics called the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). Many states have adopted the CCSSM and are in the process of developing materials and curriculum to align with those standards. This curriculum project provides a 6th grade unit plan on understanding percent aligned to the CCSSM. The curriculum project also includes: the history of state standards for mathematics; the events that led up to the first set of national standards, CCSSM; and an outline of the shifts from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards to the CCSSM.
