AbstractAthletes are beginning to specialize in one specific sport more recently than ever before. There are two types of athletes, a single sport athlete, and a multi-sport athlete. Therefore, the purpose of this synthesis was to review the literature on sport specialization. More specifically the various effects specializing versus participating in multiple sports has on an athlete, both physically and mentally. Research has shown that there are positive and negative effects to both sport specialization and diversification. Further research on this topic can give athletes a better idea on what is best for them overall.

Is sport specialization worth the risk? Myths vs. realityDueppengiesser, Justin; The College at Brockport (5/16/2019)The purpose of this synthesis project was to explore whether sport specialization is worth the potential risks. Another purpose was to explore the myths and realities of sport specialization. A comprehensive literature review took place that included 17 data based peer-reviewed articles published between 2003-2019. Results indicated that sport sampling is the best way to achieve future success in sport, not sport early specialization (Hastie, 2015). Athletes who specialize in one sport are more likely to have a lower extremity injury occur compared to athletes who sport sample (McGuine, Post, Hetzel, Brooks, Trigsted & Bell, 2017). Another factor to consider is that while athletes may be choosing to specialize to obtain collegiate scholarships, athletes who played multiple sports actually received athletic scholarships more often compared to their specializing counterparts (Ginsburg, Danforth, Ceranoglu, Durant, Robin, Smith, Kamin, Babcock, Masek, 2014). It is critical that athletes, parents/guardians, coaches and others who influence the decision to specialize or sport sample know the true risks involved when making the decision.
Concussion Assessment Management in High School and Collegiate AthleticsRaimondo, Daniel; Houston-Wilson, Cathy; McNeely, Erin (12/18/2019)Research indicates that protocol regarding concussion assessment management at the high school and collegiate level is advancing, however, there are holes in consistency that need to be filled in order to ensure accuracy. The purpose of this synthesis was to review the literature on concussion assessment management in high school and collegiate athletics. The results indicate that the lack of consistency comes as a direct result of key factors including a school’s lack of funding and lack of resources, the emphasis placed on the self-efficacy of athletic trainers, and the willingness of athletic trainers to follow guidelines provided for the testing methods.
The Role of Social Media in Intercollegiate Athletics: A Synthesis of the Research LiteraturePetersen, Susan C.; Burns, William B.; SUNY Brockport (12/12/2018)Abstract The purpose of this synthesis was to examine social media use in intercollegiate athletic departments, and the effect that social media has on colleges and student-athletes. Previous research shows that social media has not been a large presence in intercollegiate athletics until 2008 when schools started to realize that is can be a powerful tool to help with marketing strategies. Common themes that emerged through the critical mass were social media best practices at the intercollegiate level, the most commonly used platforms, the benefits of using social media for colleges and student-athletes, and the problems and potential problems of using social media for colleges and student-athletes. Future research is needed to address the everchanging field of social media as the technology grows each year and new applications are formulated to increase the presence social media has on society and intercollegiate athletics.
