AbstractThe purpose of this synthesis project was to review the literature on factors that influence character development of youth sport athletes. An extensive review of literature was conducted in order to analysis and character development and the leading factors to its development among youth athletes. There are many positives that come along with youth sport participation, and participating in sports has been known to help in the development of character and life skills. This synthesis will review the literature on participation of youth athletes in sports and the role coaches, parents and teachers play in the impact of character development.

Character Education and Students' Moral DevelopmentAllis, Elizabeth O.; The College at Brockport (2007-08-01)Schools are constantly challenged to make students better readers and better thinkers, but what about better people? The historical partnership of education and moral development places schools in a significant role. Evolving societal attitudes towards this volatile and politically charged idea as well as a growing diversity of public opinion regarding what and whose values should be taught in schools remains an obstacle. This thesis project discusses the imperative nature of educational activities focused on moral development as part of students’ school experience. It argues that moral development is in the best interest of students for future success in society as much as proficiency in academic core areas. The literature review discusses the history of character education, analyzes the implementation of character education in public schools, demonstrates the benefits of character education for primary students and their parents, and considers the relationship between character education and good citizenship. This project explored the development and study of the successful integration of character education into students' daily routine in a kindergarten classroom. Additionally, student awareness of these traits and class behaviors were also noted. Two specific character traits, responsibility and tolerance, were incorporated, examined, and practiced by eighteen kindergarten students. This four-week study was conducted in a rural school district located in Western New York. Students were given pre and post surveys to assess awareness and understanding of each character trait. Post-study student interviews were conducted to discuss perceptions of the character trait and how they felt they had personally demonstrated each character trait. Informal, anecdotal observations were noted with regard to positive and/or negative demonstrations of the studied character traits seen in the school setting. Conclusions drawn from the data analysis show a direct correlation between character development education and its effect on student behaviors in a school setting for one of the two traits, responsibility. The second character trait, tolerance, according to data gathered, did not show a demonstrated increase through the study time frame.
“The Source of Our Power”: female heroes and restorative collaboration in contemporary televisionPepe, Sarah (2017-05)Back in the 1940's Wonder Woman stood alone as a symbol of female strength, but now, in the 21st century, our female heroes reflect the reality that women need each other's love and support--as well as that of men--in order to fight back against the forces which seek to oppress us. Strikingly, three out of four of the shows in this study contain at least one instance in which heroes share space in the same literal body in order to perform feats of strength and courage: Garnet is two souls occupying a single body; all the sensates have the ability to share thoughts silently and pilot one another's bodies; and in season 4 of Buffy, the Scoobies perform a spell which imbues Buffy herself with the strengths of all of her friends so they might collectively defeat Adam, that season's "big bad." Notably, Jessica Jones lacks this kind of example, but its themes of abuse and bodily and mental invasion preclude the possibility of this type of intimate space-sharing feeling safe.
Marriage & scandal : Sherlock Holmes’s treatment of women in the Doyle CanonStrahan, Jeremy (2019-12)In both present-day media and criticism, the character of Irene Adler looms over any other female figures within the Doyle canon, continuing into modern adaptations. However, the original stories, particularly the short story case files, contain a cast of female characters serving a wide array of roles as clients, assistants, witnesses, accomplices, and even vigilantes. While diverse in scope, the case files highlight the drama of middle and upper-class marriage, struggles centered around the reality of Victorian-era values on love, marriage, and masculinity; the stories’ critique focuses on the abuse of these values for personal gain by male figures and the need for Sherlock Holmes to remedy the situation.
