    Abstract
This essay explores the treatment of female politicians in the United States government and the impact of negative treatment on potential candidates as well as voters’ perception of said candidates. Readers may obtain a better understanding of the stereotypes, double standards, and biases that are projected upon female politicians in the U.S. This work is based on a literature review of peer-reviewed journal entries, research-based books, and credible news sources.

Weak State caused long duration of insurgency between 1995 to 2016

      Abukosi, Vincent (2017-12)
Saddam Hussein’s government and the Taliban regime were both toppled in the early months of U.S. invasion. Nevertheless, the U.S. and coalitions’ supported government in both Iraq and Afghanistan have been battling insurgencies since the U.S. invasion. To be exact, the U.S. has been conducting counterinsurgency campaigns in Afghanistan since 2002, and in Iraq since 2003. Why would such operations last so long despite U.S. military might? Many scholars have argued differently on the causes of long duration insurgencies but none has given an argument that can explain all cases of prolonged insurgencies. In this paper, I used the theory of political opportunity structure which posits that “repertoires for protest have traditionally been seen as influenced by political opportunity structure, consisting of both a formal, institutional aspect and an informal, cultural one (Porta 2008, 223)” to argue that weak states caused long duration insurgency between the years of 1995 to 2016. My argument gives another alternative argument that can explain the causes of long duration insurgencies. Using 66 cases of insurgency, from the Global Terrorism dataset, I showed that state weakness caused long duration insurgency between the periods of 1995 to 2016, but the only indicators of state weakness that are statistically significant to the duration of insurgency are security effectiveness score and security legitimacy score. Therefore, my policy recommendation is that for states to carry on successful Counterinsurgency campaigns they need to focus on improving the capability of their security forces, and seek public approval of their security apparatus .

POLITICAUSE.NET: DEVELOPING A VIRTUAL CROWDSOURCING COMMUNITY TO INCREASE THE ENGAGEMENT OF WOMEN IN POLITICS

Stam, Kathryn; Thesis Advisor; Lizardi, Ryan; Second Reader; Topping, Veronique (2020-05)
For the past 40 years, the continued growth and engagement of women in the political process has created opportunities to increase the influence of the female electorate. Through grassroots political activism, community networks, and online advocacy, women voters have been galvanized to come together collectively to take action to address relevant political issues, but this rising political enthusiasm has not translated into an equal focus on women's issues or equal representation in Congress. This thesis examines the factors that have contributed to the growth and influence of women's political advocacy and explores women's political engagement/activism, traditional vs. online activism, the effectiveness of all-women online networks, and female voter demographics. Based on this research, I developed a virtual crowdsourcing community as a shared space for members to propose and discuss important and timely women's issues including domestic violence, reproductive health, and pay equity and to collaborate to suggest relevant legislation to political leaders. The purpose of this social network is provide a platform for women activists and constituents to connect with others who want to advance the political causes that are relevant to women and to increase the engagement of women in politics to achieve gender equality in local and national government.

The reactionary movement spawned by the deregulation of the uterus: the Christian conservative legal movement’s decades-long battle in response to Roe

      Gasparian, Mary A. (2020-12)
The debate on the right to choose has become one of the most polarizing issues within American law and politics. Since the landmark decision ofRoe v. Wade (1971), the conservative legal movement has been looking for ways to overturn it and began to find its niche in the 1980s, only after the liberal legal movement dominated largely from the 1960s through the 1970s. Shortly thereafter, the conservative legal movement gained momentum and the pro-life movement found where it belonged. This research will address how the Christian right has been able to efficiently mobilize to incrementally challenge the right to choose and the organizational tactics behind this movement. The relative successes of the conservative legal movement can be attributed to a vast network of attorneys, donors, academics, and elected officials. The influence of dark money groups will be discussed in regards to abortion rights in the United States, as well. Given the current trajectory of the conservative legal movement, it appears that the right to choose will likely remain intact, but will face difficult challenges in the near future.
