    Abstract
    As the need to train more teachers to work in inclusive classrooms increases, college instructors should identify and implement course assessments measuring their effectiveness in training practices. Skills in managing the challenging behaviors of students with disabilities, such as autism and emotional disturbances are important for teachers worldwide. The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of a course assessment to develop Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). The course assessment used in this study was developed, revised, and then implemented to evaluate participants‘ knowledge to identify, assess and develop plans to improve challenging behaviors of students with behavior disabilities. The course assessment was used in training teachers who currently hold general education certification in obtaining special education training. All participants were new teachers, previously certified in childhood education, and seeking additional certification in special education. Results show there were significant differences across the years of implementation of the study. The paper includes recommendations for other institutions of higher education to utilize similar course assessments into their teacher training programs.

      A Description of the Read Aloud Practices of Elementary School Teachers

      This study was designed to examine the read aloud practices of elementary school teachers. It also looked at those practices in regards to the differences exhibited between the different grade levels, and the teachers' different philosophies of reading instruction. Thirty-one teachers responded to a questionnaire designed to elicit their read aloud behaviors. The responses were recorded, tallied, and categorized according to the frequency and the similarities of the responses. These responses were then descriptively analyzed according to the three questions posed by the researcher. The findings revealed that many teachers are using the read aloud activity as a part of every school day. Their purposes for reading aloud were many but most read aloud for students’ enjoyment and to model mature reading behaviors. Most also desired to provide a rich literature background for their students. The activities that accompanied the reading were also numerous and varied, but all of the teachers conducted activities in conjunction with the read aloud. All of the teachers reported that their students enjoyed the activity, and were often motivated to read the stories read on their own. The data revealed that the current trend of educating and training teachers in the use of literature in the classroom is becoming practice in the classroom. Most of the teachers responding reported that they are using literature based language arts curricula. Implications for future research included other possible designs for similar research. Parents’ attitudes toward and practices of reading aloud was also addressed.

      Observations of Emergent Literary Behaviors in a Literacy-Enriched Play Environment: Does Teacher Guidance Make a Difference?

      This study was completed to investigate whether there are differences in emergent literacy behaviors between a teacher guided literacy-enriched play environment and a literacy-enriched play environment without teacher guidance. This study occurred over a five week period. During the first week, base-line data were collected using qualitative naturalistic observations where literacy behaviors were recorded during spontaneous play. The play area was literacy-enriched with play centers, environmental print, and literacy props. Six four-year olds were exposed to the environment for a half hour daily. During the first week of treatment, three of the subjects received teacher guidance / modeling while they played. These three subjects experienced the literacy-enriched environment without teacher guidance at a different time than the treatment group. After three weeks of exposure to the redesigned play environment, observations of the children's literacy behaviors were noted while they played in the enriched environment. Qualitative naturalistic observations of children's literacy behaviors were used to compare the treatment and control groups. There were differences in literacy behaviors between the experimental and control groups.

      A Self-Analysis of a Substitute Teacher

      This self-study investigates the personal growth and depth of knowledge gained from working as a substitute teacher. The ultimate goal of this project was to learn how these methods would prepare a substitute for a classroom of their own. Specifically, results of this study indicated strategies done proficiently as well as methods which still needed improvement. Research was gathered to determine why substitute teaching is an important topic to study. It turned out to be a valuable learning experience which included the advantage of having the time to be involved in several classrooms hands on. Data was gathered using daily questionnaires, journals, and observations for a period of six weeks. Using these data sources a number of key themes showed similar patterns and trends. For example, themes such as language/vocabulary, communication, instructional decisions, comfort level/confidence and types of behaviors were observed and dealt with. The data collected showed several examples of situations that a substitute teacher comes in contact with on a daily basis and how these situations were resolved. The results of this study suggested that although the researcher turned out to be a proficient substitute teacher, there were still areas of improvement that could be made.
