Spritiuality as a coping mechanism for African-American college students facing bereavementResearch indicates that many African Americans rely on spirituality more than psychotherapy to deal with traumatic life experiences such as bereavement. This review explores the psychotherapeutic benefits of spirituality as a coping resource in the African American community. Justification for the use of spiritual-psychotherapy as a treatment methodology for bereaved African American college students is presented. Finally, ethical considerations for using spirituality when counseling with bereaved African American college students are posed.
