The Long-Term Effects of Homophobia-Related Trauma for LGB Men and WomenA qualitative study was conducted to explore the long-term effects of homophobia-related trauma on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) men and women. Participants were recruited through a community mental health clinic. Those selected participated in individual one-hour recorded interviews. Participants identified experiences of physical, verbal, and sexual victimization and rejection from family members. Long-term effects were identified including internalized homophobia, hypervigilance, wounded resilience, and seeking safe spaces. Implications of the research include the possibility of incorporating strengths obtained from experiencing homophobia-related trauma during therapeutic treatment.
