AbstractMinorities, specifically African Americans, and gays and lesbians have been widely represented by negative stereotypes in film. These stereotypical roles have been strongly influenced by society. While these stereotypes may represent some individuals they do not represent the community as a whole. Films such as Birth of a Nation, Gone With the Wind, Imitation of Life, Foxy Brown, Chicago, Different from the Others, These Three, Victim, Making Love and Brokeback Mountain were researched and screened to determine how African Americans and the gay and lesbian individuals were portrayed. Throughout history, the roles played by these minorities have changed. How the majority of society views those minorities has been how they were represented in the films during their time. It should be the goal of Hollywood to represent minority characters with substance and not focus only on the stereotypical roles for financial profitability. More independent studios and filmmakers are needed to create positive images. These types of roles played by minorities may not change until the audiences are willing to pay to see films that have positive roles for minority characters.

An Analytical Study of the Needs of Gates Chili Central School District's Proposed 16mm Film LibraryPaulick, Du Wayne F.; The College at Brockport (1968-01-01)The purpose of this study was to analyze the needs of Gates Chili Central School District’s proposed sixteen millimeter film library by (1) determining the extent to which the existing facilities, personnel, hardware and software could be utilized to establish a functional sixteen millimeter film library by September of 1968, (2) ascertaining the amount of additional facilities, personnel, hardware and software required to establish a complete, efficient and effective sixteen millimeter film library within two years, and (3) investigating the varied systems of administrating a sixteen millimeter film library in order to establish an effective and efficient system of operation whereby most, if not all, classroom teachers could be relatively assured of receiving the requested film before the use date. The hypothesis was that there is a normative plan for the establishment of a sixteen millimeter educational film library.
Gender Games/Trauma Games: Gender and Victimology in the Hunger Games TrilogyScherer, Ellen (State University of New York at Fredonia, 2015-08)In this thesis, I claim that victimhood and vulnerability can be used as a form of agency. I argue that many of the problems associated with the concept of vulnerability come from an outdated and binary way of thinking about gender. A brief review of media and literature reveals that this way of thinking has a history of plaguing the YA novel, thus limiting the ways in which YA readers think about women and vulnerability. Using elements of queer, feminist and trauma critical theory, I prove Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy creates the opportunity for the trauma of victimhood and vulnerability to be used for individual agency.
