Afro-Surrealism touches upon the black imagination as it relates to collective memory and the overall experience of African Americans. Art and literature take on a mystical tone in the works of Romare Bearden, Archibald Motley, and Aaron Douglas. This paper begs the question, what is Afro-Surrealism? The interconnectivity of black souls and the prospects of freedom in an oppressive world allow these Afro-Surrealists to exist just above reality and disseminate powerful interpretations of the American experience.Collections
