• Advanced Models and Algorithms for Self–Similar IP Network Traffic Simulation and Performance Analysis

      The paper examines self-similar (or fractal) properties of real communication network traffic data over a wide range of time scales. These self-similar properties are very different from the properties of traditional models based on Poisson and Markov-modulated Poisson processes. Advanced fractal models of sequentional generators and fixed-length sequence generators, and efficient algorithms that are used to simulate self-similar behavior of IP network traffic data are developed and applied. Numerical examples are provided; and simulation results are obtained and analyzed.
    • Redesigning the Healthcare Model to Address Obesity Problem Using Incentives Delivered through a Combination of Processes and Mobile Technologies

      Obesity and other lifestyle-related illnesses are among the top global healthcare challenges today. Obesity in young population is an alarming predictor for obesity in adulthood, but also entails different short term health complications. Knowing how to stay healthy is not enough to motivate young individuals to adopt healthy lifestyles. However, relevant progress can be achieved with use of incentives delivered through combination of processes and mobile technologies. Recognizing effectiveness of new healthcare model to prevent obesity in young population, an innovative multi-dimensional cross-disciplinary ICT framework should be developed, which uses sophisticated game mechanics to motivate behavior changes towards healthier lifestyles and supports three main functions: individual & environmental monitoring, including wearable sensors, mobile phones and multimedia diaries; feedback to users, presenting personalized healthy options for alternative lifestyles; and social connectivity, encouraging involvement in sharing experiences through social networks and social engagement. System development should be based on user-centered design, social and networking games and online education and supported by a wide stakeholder’s ecosystem, including health authorities and research institutions, industries and academia from the ICT and healthcare sectors, as well as food companies and SMEs.
    • Thinking eHealth: A Mathematical Background of an Individual Health Status Monitoring System to Empower Young People to Manage their Health

      This paper focuses on a mathematical background of an individual health status monitoring system to empower young people to manage their health. The proposed health status monitoring system uses symptoms observed with mobile sensing devices and prior information about health and environment (provided it exists) to define individual physical and psychological status. It assumes that a health status identification process is influenced by many parameters and conditions. It has a flexible logical inference system providing positive psychological influence on young people since full acceptance of recommendations on their behavioral changes towards healthy lifestyles is reached and a correct interpretation is guaranteed. The model and algorithms of the individual health status monitoring system are developed based on the composition inference rule in Zadeh's fuzzy logic. The model allows us to include in the algorithms of logical inference the possibility of masking (by means of a certain health condition) the symptoms of other health situations as well as prior information (if it exists) regarding health and environment. The algorithms are generated by optimizing the truth of a single natural “axiom”, which connects an individual health status (represented by classes of health situations) with symptoms and matrices of influence of health situations on symptoms and masking of symptoms. The new algorithms are fairly different from traditional algorithms, in which the result is produced in the course of numerous single processing rules. Therefore, the use of a composition inference rule makes a health status identification process faster and the obtained results more precise and efficient comparing to traditional algorithms.
    • Study on Estimating Buffer Overflow Probabilities in High-Speed Communication Networks

      The paper recommends new methods to estimate effectively the probabilities of buffer overflow in high-speed communication networks. The frequency of buffer overflow in queuing system is very small; therefore the overflow is defined as rare event and can be estimated using rare event simulation with continuous-time Markov chains. First, a two-node queuing system is considered and the buffer overflow at the second node is studied. Two efficient rare event simulation algorithms, based on the Importance sampling and Cross-entropy methods, are developed and applied to accelerate the buffer overflow simulation with Markov chain modeling. Then, the buffer overflow in self-similar queuing system is studied and the simulations with long-range dependent self-similar traffic source models are conducted. A new efficient simulation algorithm, based on the RESTART method with limited relative error technique, is developed and applied to accelerate the buffer overflow simulation with SSM/M/1/B modeling using different parameters of arrival processes and different buffer sizes. Numerical examples and simulation results are provided for all methods to estimate the probabilities of buffer overflow, proposed in this paper.
    • Analysis of Turbo Code Behavior with Extrinsic Information Transfer Charts in High-Speed Wireless Data Services

      This paper examines turbo codes that are currently introduced in many international standards and implemented in numerous advanced communication systems, and evaluates the process of extrinsic information transfer (EXIT). The convergence properties of the iterative decoding process, associated with a given turbo-coding scheme, are estimated using the analysis technique based on so-called extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. This approach provides a possibility to predict the bit-error rate (BER) of a turbo code system with only the extrinsic information transfer chart. It is shown that extrinsic information transfer charts are powerful tools to analyze and optimize the convergence behavior of iterative systems utilizing the turbo principle, i.e., systems exchanging and refining extrinsic information. The idea is to consider the associated soft-input soft-output (SISO) stages as information processors, which map input a priori log likelihood ratios (LLRs) onto output extrinsic LLRs, the information content being obviously assumed to increase from input to output, and introduce them to the design of turbo systems without the reliance on extensive simulation. Compared with the other methods for generating extrinsic information transfer functions, the suggested approach provides insight into the iterative behavior of linear turbo systems with substantial reduction in numerical complexity.

    • Qualitative Evaluation of IoT-Driven eHealth: KM, Business Models, Deployment and Evolution

      This article explains that eHealth has major potential, and its adoption may be considered necessary to achieve increased ambulant and remote medical care, increased quality, reduced personnel needs, and reduced costs potential in healthcare. In this paper, the authors try to give a reasonable, qualitative evaluation of IoT-driven eHealth from theoretical and practical viewpoints. They look at associated knowledge management issues and contributions of IoT to eHealth, along with requirements, benefits, limitations and entry barriers. Important attention is given to security and privacy issues. Finally, the conditions for business plans and accompanying value chains are realistically analyzed. The resulting implementation issues and required commitments are also discussed. The authors confirm that IoT-driven eHealth can happen and will happen; however, much more needs to be addressed to bring it back in sync with medical and general technological developments in an industrial state-of-the-art perspective and to recognize and get timely the benefits.
    • IoT- and Big Data-Driven Data Analysis Services for Third Parties, Strategic Implications and Business Opportunities

      This article describes ubiquitous sensing devices, enabled by wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies, now cut across every area of modern day living, affecting individuals and businesses and offering the ability to obtain and measure environmental indicators. Proliferation of these devices in a communicating-actuating network creates an Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT provides the tools to establish a major, global data-driven ecosystem that also enables Big Data techniques to be used. New business models may focus on the provision of services, i.e., the Internet of Services (IoS). These models assume the presence and development of the necessary IoT measurement and control instruments, communications infrastructure, and easy access to the data collected and information generated. Different business models may support opportunities to create revenue and value for various types of customers. This article contributes to the literature by considering, a first, knowledge-based management practices, business models, strategic implications and business opportunities for third-party data analysis services.
    • Application of Integrated Building Information Modeling, IoT and Blockchain Technologies in System Design of a Smart Building

      The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry has not adopted digital transformation enthusiastically like other industries, for instance, manufacturing, aerospace or finance. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an innovative technology that is considered as an opportunity for the AEC industry to move to the digital era and improve the collaboration among stakeholders by applying Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). BIM provides all required tools and automations to achieve end-to-end communication, data exchange and information sharing among collaborators. Accordingly, virtual 3D models, created by the BIM process, delivered as physical assets, monitored in real-time and managed using Building Management Systems (BMS), can adopt the Internet of Things (IoT) designs and services. However, the implementation of IoT in a highly modular environment with various moving parts and inter-dependencies between stakeholders leads to security concerns. Therefore, this paper proposes system design that employs the blockchain technology as a measure to secure and control the framework that involves integrated IoT and BIM technologies. Although this paper considers system design applied in a smart museum, the authors assume that design is generic and applicable in other building categories. For instance, this design can be implemented in the ongoing Alumni Hall renovation project at State University of New York College at Oneonta.
    • Ethical Climate and Ethical Leadership in Public Accounting Firms

      The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between ethical work climate and corporate leadership. We discuss leadership style, ethical work climate, and ethical leadership. We seek to explore these relationships among established conceptual frameworks, and we intend to apply them to public accounting firms at the conceptual level. The paper concludes with a proposed model to empirically investigate how the frameworks and concepts apply to the public accounting setting. The goal is to ascertain whether the proposed relationships hold within the setting of professional service firms in order to better understand the factors impacting ethical behavior in public accounting firms.
    • Analysis of Queueing Networks in Equilibrium: Numerical Steady-State Solutions of Markov Chains

      Equilibria of queueing networks are a means for performance analysis of real communication networks introduced as Markov chains. In this paper, the authors developed, evaluated, and compared computational procedures to obtain numerical solutions for queueing networks in equilibrium with the use of direct, iterative, and aggregative techniques in steady-state analysis of Markov chains. Advanced computational procedures are developed with the use of Gaussian elimination, power iteration, Courtois’ decomposition, and Takahashi’s iteration techniques. Numerical examples are provided together with comparative analysis of obtained results. The authors consider these procedures are also applicable to other domains where systems are described with comparable queuing models and stochastic techniques are sufficiently relevant. Several suitable domains of applicability are proposed.
    • The Impact of Stock Liquidity on Audit Pricing

      This paper investigates whether firms’ stock liquidity is associated with audit fees. Stock liquidity can increase institutional monitoring by either helping investors overcome free-rider problems to intervene in management decisions, or disciplining management through the threat of exit. Given that stock liquidity can enhance institutional monitoring, firms with higher stock liquidity may have incentives to utilize high quality audits which always result in higher audit fees to satisfy the demand of institutional investors. Consistent with these arguments, I find that firms with liquid stocks are more likely to pay significantly higher audit fees.
    • The Effects of Marketing on Commercial Banks’ Operating Businesses and Profitability: Evidence from US Bank Holding Companies

      Purpose: This paper aims to explore the role that marketing plays in commercial bank management. Specifically, we examine the effects of marketing activities on banks' operating businesses, i.e. deposit, loan and service businesses. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of marketing activities on bank profitability. Design/methodology/approach: A series of hypotheses about the associations of marketing activities with banks' deposits, loans, services and profitability are developed. The fixed-effects linear model with an AR (1) disturbance is applied on the panel dataset of FR Y-9C reports to test these hypotheses. Findings: The results show that total loans and service proceeds are positively associated with marketing activities, which is measured by banks' advertising and marketing expenses. The effects of marketing activities on loan and service businesses are far-reaching to the second quarter in future. Moreover, the results reveal that profitability, measured as net income over total assets, increases with marketing activities. Practical implications: From the findings of this study, bank managers can learn the strengths and weaknesses of their marketing strategies and therefore better coordinate the marketing resources used in different areas of business. The study provides bank managers with a direction to examine the weaknesses in their marketing management. Originality/value: An issue in bank marketing that has not been explored yet is whether and how marketing activities affect commercial banks' specific businesses, such as deposits, loans and services, and how improvements in the specific businesses further affect bank profitability. This study is the first one to address this fundamental issue in bank marketing. Furthermore, the study provides the supplementary evidence that marketing contributes to commercial banks' profitability.

      Scholarship on the Dutch Atlantic has grown and changed a lot in 30 years, with older themes like colonial weakness and insignificance giving way to a newly discovered Dutch vitality. This essay demonstrates the change by summarizing the recent research and highlighting the military, economic, and cultural impact of the Dutch in West Africa and America, plus the possible impacts of both places on the Dutch in Europe. The essay also cautions writers against taking arguments about dynamism, diversity, tolerance, cosmopolitanism, and modernity too far.
    • Estimating the Discount Rate of S&P 500 Portfolio With Cointegration Analysis

      Using cointegration analysis, this paper examines the evolution of the discount rate of S&P 500 portfolio from 1926 to 2019. By estimating on a 30-year time window moving over time, we find that the discount rate has gradually become significantly smaller. The results suggest that capital cost in the U.S. stock market, represented by the discount rate of S&P 500 portfolio, has been declining as time goes by, which implies that the U.S. stock market has become more informative and efficient, since the risk of a stock, which determines its capital cost, is associated with the stock’s asymmetric information.
    • Casting the Bucket and the Ballot: African American Voters in the Booker T. Washington Era 1890-1910

      Although the suppression and disenfranchisement narrative has been well documented, one aspect of the story remains untold, the enfranchised minority. African Americans were not immediately eliminated from the voting booth and remained a presence in Southern politics. Voter suppression and disenfranchisement plagued African American voting during the 19th century’s last decade and the 20th century’s first decade. Mississippi’s 1890 constitutional convention specifically targeted the state’s African American voters instituting new voter registration and voting requirements that included a literacy test, understanding clause, and poll tax. Mississippi revolutionized Southern politics as several Southern states followed Mississippi’s model and drafted new state constitutions or amended existing constitutions to severely impair or remove African Americans from the voting arena. The question that historians have not explored is, how did the African American voting class survive the first voter suppression/disenfranchisement wave and how did Southern whites respond? African American gains in education and landownership positioned them to thwart voting hurdles that Southern legislatures designed based on assumptions pertaining to deficiencies in African American literacy, stability, and wealth accumulation. The continued African American presence in the political arena forced Southern whites to create new ways to maintain and cement their racial supremacy. Literacy test and poll taxes underestimated the African American education and land movements existing within the African American community during slavery and following emancipation. The rise of the rural working and middle class created an independent black proletariat capable of controlling their own financial destinies. Despite state constitutions reflecting anti-fourteenth and fifteenth amendment sentiments, there remained an African American voting class which Southern whites had to contend. Casting the Bucket and the Ballot: African American Voters in the Booker T. Washington Era 1890-1910 presents the African Americans who played a role in dictating late 19th century and early 20th century suffrage politics despite being in non-elected positions through biography and photography. Their continued voting presence exploited the weaknesses in the literacy test, poll tax, understanding clause, and residency requirements which Southern legislatures expended significant political capital justifying and implementing. Rather than providing a historical assessment, this work provides an encyclopedia of African American registered and actual voters during the disenfranchisement era. By demonstrating the quantity of voters, one is able to see the failed efforts of new Southern constitutions to effectively eliminate African American voters and the rebirth of African Americans in local, state, and national politics led to the creation of the white primary as the ultimate disenfranchising measure. Privatizing primary elections which dictated the terms of who could vote was the last, desperate, yet most effective, effort to achieve a white-dominated political system. The white primary represented the “second wave” of voter suppression and disenfranchisement that shaped 20th century suffrage politics culminating with the 1965 Voting Rights Act. To understanding this second wave, history must first address who were the African Americans that survived the first wave and how (in some instances) they defeated Southern racists attempts to strip African Americans of their political agency and citizenship.
    • Examining the Effects of Facebook’s Personalized Advertisements on Brand Love

      Personalized advertisements have been increasingly employed as a marketing strategy that enables a company to build strong relationship with customers. This research adopts the perceived personalization framework to show its consequential impacts on deep emotional constructs (i.e., brand attachment and brand love), especially on the Facebook ad platform. We model perceived personalization within a nomological framework that includes several well-established constructs (brand experience, brand self-expressiveness, brand attachment, and brand love) and establish causal relationships between the constructs. The current study sheds light into the psychological mechanism of personalization by underscoring the roles of perceived personalization and its positive impacts on consumer–brand relationships. Results from two studies show that perceived personalization of personalized advertisements is an essential factor of stronger brand love. Specifically, this research reveals that perceived personalized Facebook ads positively impact brand experience and brand self-expressiveness, which in turn enhances brand attachment and brand love. This paper contributes to branding literature by illustrating how advertisements strengthen consumer brand relationships and enable brand managers to make better informed decisions when crafting personalized advertisements.

      The Pandemic may have imposed a temporary halt on live performances, but musicians and concert presenters continued to find innovative ways of bringing live music to audiences hungry for solace and beauty. “Music in a Sacred Space” at The Church on the Hill in Flushing, New York sponsored a virtual piano recital I was pleased to offer there last January. The program included works by Mozart, Chopin, Gershwin and Turina, and remains accessible on YouTube.

    • Milne Library as Scholarly Partner

      During fall semester 2021, Brendan Aucoin (Milne Library) and Karen Stewart (Communication and Media) collaborated to present Leap of Faith, an applied-learning video game project, to the campus community. The game's opening reception and month-long installation at Milne Library served as a means for displaying creative faculty scholarship publicly, and as an opportunity for the library to partner with faculty scholars in new and exciting ways. In this presentation, Brendan and Karen discuss the ways the library acted as a scholarly collaborator, including the repurposing of a storage room as a display space for scholarship, library support in furthering the development of the game, and library resources curated to support game studies at SUNY Oneonta.
