Research shows that storytelling and fantasy literature can improve a reader's ability to empathize with oppressed groups. The purpose of this paper is to examine J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter series through the lens of J.R.R. Tolkiens concept of recovery, a theory devised by Tolkien in the 1950s which describes the ability for fantasy literature to assist readers in better understanding their own world. The arguments made within the paper are based on close reading to the seven books as well as scholarly articles which argue the idea of learning empathy through the books.Accessibility Statement
