dc.description.abstract | Epilepsy is defined as a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The Ketogenic Diet, which in modern day is seen as a fad diet for weight loss, was actually originally created as a treatment for epilepsy in children before pharmaceuticals took over. It is still used as a treatment in children who aren't reacting to medications given and in about 90% of cases, doctors have found that children who stuck with the diet had a significant decrease in seizures or no seizures at all after 5 years. However the Ketogenic Diet is a very strict diet so it can be very hard to follow especially with children who have a tendency to be picky eaters. | |
