After finishing high school, adolescents entering a college experience are faced with a crucial transition. The students begin college exposed to an entirely new environment. The adaptation to college life, challenges, and responsibilities must be quick. Students have to form new relationships and are separated from their familiar relationships with family and friends. These pressures may cause college students to experience an increase in symptoms of depression. Depression can affect the student's academic performance because of difficulties in concentration and regulating their efforts. Social support is a key aspect of how college students may deal with depression. Students who have higher levels of support or peer relationships have lower levels of depressive symptoms. Homesickness is commonly experienced by students adjusting to college. Students who are experiencing symptoms of depression should utilize university counseling services to help them effectively deal with their symptoms.Accessibility Statement
