The 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry was an underdog regiment, as well as an unusual regiment, led not by the classic military types, rather than being led by military academy graduates, the regimental staff was made up of civilian academics, men like Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and Ellis Spear. chamberlain was a professor of rhetoric at Bowdoin College in Maine, and Ellis Spear was his student prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. Chamberlain and Spear both shed blood together during the war, which created a bond that was thought to be unbreakable, but as the decades dragged on, hostilities incrementally came about regarding the circumstances of the battle, the war and the characters of some of the men. Ellis Spear, a man who once admired his former professor turned Commander, ended up despising him, speaking of him disrespectfully to another veteran via letter. The Battle of Gettysburg and the 20th Maine's skirmish on Little Round Top was an important event in the lives of the 20th Maine men, it gave Colonel Chamberlain the ability to act boldly and from his decision making on that hill, he led his regiment not only to victory over the confederate forces, but he also led himself and the regiment to fame. Ellis Spear and discussed what went on during the battle, what actually happened? It was a subject that became of much debate between the men, Colonel Chamberlain writing extensively on it and putting his eloquent writing skills to use, Ellis Spear found him to be boasting of himself and being too prideful, which is what "supposedly" triggered Spear's ultimate resentment of Chamberlain, there's more to the issue than Chamberlain's narration of the battle, issues that are more personal, involving elements of jealousy.Accessibility Statement
