Here's the Thing is a coming of age story set in late 90's around two young black women who each struggle with their identity. While Carmel struggles with her gender identity, Ophelie struggles with her sexual identity. Although they share much intimacy and there are romantic feelings expressed, this isn't a love story; rather this is a story about the journey of coming to terms with ones self and the self we allow others to experience. Through external situations that arise in their personal lives and in society at the time, Ophelie and Carmel not only experience a better understanding of their roles in their most personal relationships, but also where they fit in society. However, the question is, do these roles intersect? Or are they constantly being faced with living behind masks, navigating in a world that wasn't built with their survival in mind?Collections
