The military industrial complex, a system of people and organizations associated with the creation of weapons and military innovations. The military industrial complex in a nation is to marshal political help for expanded military spending by the national government. The term military industrial complex was first utilized by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower in his Farewell Address on January 17, 1961. Eisenhower cautioned that the United States must be wary of the power and influence of the military industrial complex, which included individuals from Congress, from regions subject to military enterprises, the Department of Defense, and exclusive military contractors (e.g., Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman). Eisenhower believed that the military industrial complex would develop situations that probably won't be in the nation's best interest, and he expected that its impact, left unchecked, could undermine American values.Collections
