In this research, Latina women that enjoy dancing, specifically Latin dances such as cumbia, and bachata, will be examined, be it professionally or recreationally, as well as those who shy away from dancing as a whole. Two research questions will be explored; 1) How does participation in Latin dance influence the formation of ethnic identity among Latina women? 2) How do Latina women negotiate exclusion and participation within Latin dance culture as female dancers? This study will examine identity and gender roles within the Latinx community and provide a deeper look into the ways in which Latin dance has been crucial in influencing the formation and evolution of national identity. Although Latina women, more or less, are traditionally expected to take the role as a “follower”, they have continuously been undervalued when it comes to Latin dance and music industries altogether, in comparison to men. Latin dance has a way of giving women a sense of empowerment. Moreover, Latina women benefit from their participation in Latin dance, as it allows them to connect to one’s culture, while developing one’s sense of entitlement and control.Accessibility Statement
