dc.description.abstract | This project revolves around memories from my own upbringing. The process of specific, seemingly arbitrary memories being clung to is explored, as well as the pattern of viewing these memories as almost heavenly despite the reality of external difficulties. There is something melancholy in these images. These moments were perfect, and many of them were experienced during times of distress. I often inaccurately view these good memories as being from a time of equal happiness, although in reality that is not the case for most of them. I believe this tendency towards the idealization of memory to be somewhat universal. While the theme I originally set about depicting in this series is the nature of memory, what ended up becoming equally relevant to the series was my exploration of relationships in childhood and how they shape us. From one’s parents, to the multiple forms of friendship we build, this project reflects the importance of relationships in the shaping of who we are and who we will become. | |
