The primary objective of this research is to examine two works by director Nora Ephron and discuss how they work within the genre of The Romantic Comedy. Through an analytical reading of Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail we will discuss the historic and generic attributes of the traditional Hollywood romance. In addition we will discuss how Ephron’s films engage with an ongoing discourse in feminist film theory and how these films portray female spectatorhip. We will consider how Ephron makes use of reflexive narrative techniques to explore how the depiction of female desire paradoxically shapes and is shaped by the construction of the love story.Accessibility Statement
