COMMUNICATIONS AND COMICS: HOW COMICS ARE BEING USED TO TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES

Abstract

This project explores the evolution of comics and how they changed over time. Comics although had have a sorted beginning over time comics have had an impact on communication. Comics are not only books for kids they have a way of being used in a variety way. They have impacted a variety of mediums and have helped show information to various demographics. Within this project comics as a narrative is explored from medical PSA’s to exploring personal narratives such as mental health and social issues. By using research which gives a general timeline about comics one can learn how comics aren’t just about superheroes. You do not need to have superpowers to create an impact on other comics have the power to do this. Explaining complex issues from mental health to social issues comics have come a long way. Currently with health being more of a concern due to the COVID-19 pandemic using graphics and creating comics have been being used more to help the public understand the urgency to stay safe. Art can help others during this shut down art is not only used a tool to help cope with isolation, but it can also help examine public outcries when it comes to social and political issues. By talking about these narratives in a comic format It can give us the ability to feel less alone. In addition to this project I have also taken the time to develop a short comic called Muz The Mummy 2020 Edition: Tales of World Events and Anxiety. Muz is a small non-binary mummy who like many of us is just trying to understand the complicated world we live in today. The comic talks about living with anxiety, living in a world with COVID-19 and isolation, and lastly a comic addressing recent protests and the Black Lives Matter Movement. The goal was to reflect on how strange 2020 has been for everyone. This companion piece will help justify currently the importance of comics.
