Abstract Background: Managing a successful platonic cross-sex relationship is usually a challenge for both sexes. But given that close friendships are beneficial to human happiness, do these benefits compensate for the challenges? Objective: The aim of this study is to discover if it is worthwhile to pursue platonic friendships given the various challenges for both participants. Design and Method: The research method is based on the current literature. This research was assessed through the SUNY Purchase library and its various online research sources. The Research Question: Cross-Sex Platonic Relationships: Do the benefits outweigh the challenges? Results: The significance of this study is that heterosexual men and women continue to seek platonic friendships for various reasons, some beneficial, some problematic. Conclusion: Friendships are more important than ever in our culture today and people are seeking out friendships from opposite-sex friends for many reasons. Men and women differ in their reasoning and both experience turbulence in these relationships. Each person will have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages to decide for themselves if these friendships are worth it in the end. Keywords: cross-sex, opposite-sex, platonic love, friends with benefitsAccessibility Statement
