dc.description.abstract | ‘Healing from the Breaking’ is a visual exploration of how Diasporic people weave together our memories, in order to gain a more complete understanding of our origins. A few years ago I traced my ancestry back to Ghana, Ivory Coast, Benin, and Togo; the largest percentage stemmed from Ghana. Although this work was catalyzed by my genealogical foundation, it is heavily informed by Margaret Musgroves ‘The Spider Weaver: A Legend of Kente Cloth’ and Toni Morrison’s ‘Song of Solomon.’ I have chosen to conceptualize missing ancestral links by depicting Diasporic people as fragmented beings, with luminous stellar explosions escaping from within them. The studio artwork for my project include 5 paintings and 1 woven tapestry. | |
