Mother Stands For Comfort: A play in two acts

Abstract

Teaser/Logline/Summary: In this play, a socialite mother and her black-market organ-dealer of a son reconcile after a brief but vehement falling-out, in the process permanently alienating the youngest child in the family and accidentally conditioning a community of invasive grizzlies to appreciate human flesh. (One) Central dramatic goal: I think this play tries to explore, among many other things, how traits, ideas, body parts, etc., may be transferred between bodies or objects to be put on, taken off, blended, or even rejected outright by their host, through both a social and familial lens. A note to my readers, (in the tradition of those scientific papers that conclude by criticizing their own methodology): This script has gone through several iterations, and I think this is the most focused yet. Of course I say that with some irony, as it's still not entirely "economical." But I think, through this project, I not only learned a lot about structure, but also picked up some hot leads on how I'd like to approach plot, theme, meaning in general... I could go on, but I won't. I grew, I think. I hope. Or maybe my brain's just finally reaching the end of adolescence, and that's where this sense of emerging clarity comes from. Anyway, I hope this story reflects something back to you as well. I look forward to talking to both of you about this latest iteration (and after six drafts, the first one with an actual title!), and want to thank you again and again for your help during my learning of this craft.
