This paper argues that two colonial cities, New York and Newport, followed policies of toleration that made it possible for Jews to settle in the United States. The toleration was not consistent, though, which makes for a dramatic story. This paper outlines the story of these two communities and the people who made America a new home for the future generations of Jewish people.Collections
