My senior project production and thesis of Federico Garcia Lorca's play "El Publico" examines the relationship between an individual's expression of love and desire through the perspective of one's prioritization of freedom of expression and security. I argue that love's expression as a form of communication in both public and private environments is influenced heavily by one's perception of their role within a given community and the social norms and acceptable means of participation in the community as a whole; therefore one's expression of their desire is dictated by their individual prioritization of either their need to express their desire or their need to create stability and security within their social environment. The benefits and consequences of both love's free manifestation and it's repression and censorship in the social realm are discussed utilizing Lorca's play as the contextual foreground, from which these topics are discussed and represented in the piece, in order to demonstrate how the artist tackles these concepts within their given time period and social climate.Accessibility Statement
