    Abstract
Abstract Background: Smartphone usage has led to the development of modern society. Nonetheless, the rise of technology, specifically the rise of smartphones, has compelled college students to become more socially anxious, build dependency issues, and have addictive behaviors. Today, smartphone usage is part of the norm and is used for personal, entertainment, and social purposes. Technology has become this "social tool" that people have depended on throughout the years daily. Nonetheless, smartphone usage, has left a negative impact on the mental health of young adults. Objective: This study aims to research peer-reviewed literature that supports the argument of the social and psychological negative impact on college students. Design and Method: The research method used was peer-reviewed literature articles that contained scholarly articles, real-person interviews, surveys, online articles, historical data, time diaries, and journals. The research used to answer the research questions was primary quantitative data from 1998 to 2021. The amount of time college students spent on their smartphones were evaluated, as well as the social and psychological behaviors that relate to their smartphones. The research focused on different College students within the United States and students outside of the country to capture how smartphone usage negatively impacts students no matter where they're based. The main points the research aims to convey: The Growth of Technology, The correlation Between Technology and How Individuals Interact With One Another, Social Anxiety and Less Face To Face Interactions, Smartphone Usage, and Addiction and Dependency Issues. Results: This study is important because of how fast smartphones have evolved and have become part of modern society. It has caused members of society, specifically students, to detach from reality, become reliant on their smartphones, and maximize addictive behaviors. The results show that the constant usage of smartphones interferes with a student's social and psychological success. Conclusion: As a result of the research, smartphone usage is problematic and has refrained students from face-to-face interactions, refrained students from investing in legacy media, and has affected their cognitive development of students. Furthermore, students should try to be aware of and manage the amount of time spent on their smartphones.
