dc.description.abstract | Human beings are the most complex organisms on this planet, with our bodies comprised of cells, tissues, organs, and ten interconnected systems responsible for carrying out the functions necessary for our existence. Yet, the hidden viscera that lie under the surface of our skin rarely draws the attention of the average person. With our organs encased within our exteriors and not easily accessible to our eyes, my paintings and sculptures are the external portrayals of our hidden internal structures, our "innards". I dissect and sever parts of our bodies from their whole, such as muscles, genitalia, and fat, presenting them in abnormal settings, ultimately generating alien and viscerally unsettling imagery making them surprisingly unidentifiable. I am curious about whether these newly created complex forms are intriguing or threatening in their nauseating explicitness? This tension between repulsion and attraction, as well as the beautiful and the grotesque, is an antithetical fine line that my art explores and works within. | |
