In 2010, Afro-Peruvian activist group, LUNDU, began their campaign, Apuntate Contra el Racismo. LUNDU's campaign was one of the first to take a look into racism within Peru. Their campaign takes a look into two racial stereotypical characters, El Negro Mama and La Paisana Jacinta, as they claim to portray negative images against Afro-Peruvians and Indigenous women. Areas of exploration splits off detailing the origins of television into Peru with the start of Frecuencia 2's journey. The ethnic backgrounds of Peru solidify which groups are targeted throughout the thesis. The following portion of the senior project is the center point about the origins of Mama and Jacinta, the usage of Blackface, their popularity, and multiple analysis of episodes from each character. The next portion of the project targets the career of Jorge Benavides, the creator of Mama and Jacinta. LUNDU's campaign consists of the origins of their organization, the founder of LUNDU, Monica Carrillo, the aftermath and brutalization of fans of the characters, and the end results of Mama and Jacinta.Accessibility Statement
