Abstract

Kyungmin Lee questioned what is truly important in life and was curious about the metaphysical time-space where life and death coexisted. It also made her think about her existence and where she belongs, motivating factors in her work. Through painting, Kyungmin poses those conceptual questions by abstractly portraying spaces where she has been, objects relating to memorial ceremonies, and representations of daily necessities. Kyungmin address these questions inspired by religion, philosophies, and experiences working as a flight attendant. In her work, she explores the relational stance of life and death and how it manifests in space primarily in two ways. One involves expressing through images, and the other through raw materials. In her paintings, she depicts places where she has experienced rituals; objects related to memorial ceremonies, such as vessels, candles, incense, incense holders, and funeral portraits; and objects of daily necessities. She uses specific materials, such as resin, mirrors, and oil-based mediums that reflect the viewer to convey my story. In addition to the subject matter and the physical materials, She attempts to embody the idea of a commemorative place whose significance lies in the coexistence of life and death. These paintings are transient, subject to adjustment, and open to possibilities of life.
