The play For Colored Women is inspired by Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. The plot follows six Black women, Lady in Red, Lady in Blue, Lady in Yellow, Lady in Orange, Lady in Green and Lady in Purple. These six women are a diverse group of women who have experienced many trials and tribulations. The themes discussed in the play include domestic violence, racism and reproductive health. My goal was to use the combined knowledge from my theatre education and my psychology minor to find the most truthful way to bring this piece of art into the modern world and our community. In addition, learning about the systemic racism that Black expectant women put up with and presenting that in a genuine manner. For Colored Girls... by Ntozake Shange was first performed in a woman's bar in Berkeley California and was professionally produced in 1975. The shows mission was to get the story's/realities of many Black women into the public more. We have seen a countless number of times how Black women and their stories are not the main focus, however we wanted to create a space where Black women could experience a space catered for them. The production comes at a time that is important for society, a reckoning of how change needs to come. Recognizing differences in everyone is important but not at the expense of people's lives. Playing a part in this wonderful production was an exciting opportunity to showcase to the Purchase community. Although this production was the most intense material I have worked on, it taught me new ways of connecting with my character. Exploring her gentle nature that is as soft as a rose petal, verses switching dynamically to her more tenacious side, was a challenge to figure out but a pleasure to explore. Putting this piece up in 2021 on the college campus was an important statement that we need to continue to make. Through sharing and conversing about issues that affect all of us is the way we bring about change. Sometimes telling painful stories heals the soul and brings peace to many.Accessibility Statement
