With her past looming behind her, Carla returns to her hometown to begin her life anew with her young daughter, Mina, whom she left behind during her military deployment. Her surprising arrival in her conservative hometown does not reform her reputation, especially among the Church of Friends her parents Jessa and Poppy belong to. With the attempted erasure of her from her daughter's life, Carla is left to fight for her daughter's freedom while attempting to build a new life outside their hometown, all as Mina's ceremonial match and branding ceremony approaches. Carla enlists the help of her mother-in-law Odessa, who is also shunned by the church, to help her get her baby back.
