Background: Critical Race Theory (CRT) controversy has led to a widespread misunderstanding of its meaning and purpose. CRT is a framework that explores how race intersects with societal structures and institutions, highlighting that racism is not solely a result of personal prejudice but is also embedded within legal systems. However, misinterpretations and misinformation have fueled a divisive discourse, with some viewing CRT as a threat to American unity. This threat has resulted in legislative efforts to ban CRT in K-12 education, despite its limited presence in school curricula. Such bans hinder critical thinking and disproportionately impact marginalized students. Objective: This study aims to clarify CRT, including its origins and the factors contributing to its distortion and misrepresentation. Furthermore, the study examines the impact of CRT bans on education in the United States, specifically exploring the potential consequences for younger generations. Design and Method: The research method is based on a peer-reviewed literature review of scholarly articles, journals, and online articles. This research addresses the following questions: What are CRT and its main ideas and tenets? How is CRT's meaning being misinterpreted currently? How CRT's misinterpretation is responsible for the existing and potential anti-CRT laws and bans in the specific states of the USA? What are the potential consequences of the current state's anti-CRT legislatures and bans? Results: This study is significant because it aims to combat misinformation about CRT and provide accurate information about its purpose and potential impact on education, personal growth, and freedom of speech. The lack of current research on this topic and the rapid spread of anti-CRT propaganda highlights the importance of providing reliable data to reduce susceptibility to conspiracy theories and enable well-informed decision-making, particularly for parents and their children. Conclusions: This research emphasizes the significant impact of CRT on shaping our society and the current threat it faces. The study highlights the importance of CRT's principles in striving for a fair and equitable society and the gradual erosion and misrepresentation of its meaning. The bans on CRT teaching limit educational opportunities, perpetuate misinformation, and disproportionately harm students of color. Scholars must engage in public education efforts to clarify CRT's purpose and challenge false narratives. Further research should be conducted to advance our understanding of race and racism and promote evidence-based approaches in education. Collaboration among educators, policymakers, and community leaders is vital to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout society.
