This senior project will examine a deeper understanding of baseball’s ties to American nationalism by analyzing structural frameworks of baseball, Sports Illustrated’s coverage of baseball between 1994-2022, contemporary marketing tactics of Major League Baseball, and how baseball is passed down through generations of fans and players. Through the methodologies of participant-observation and structured interviews, as well as the personal experience of being a college baseball player, this piece serves those who still believe that baseball is “America’s national pastime” and are seeking to engage with the deeper understanding of why baseball earned this title.Accessibility Statement
