With recent developments in modern technology, particularly that of AI, questions have risen concerning the value of art and the artist. Do programs such as ChatGPT and Midjourney mark an era in which technology fulfills the role of artist, thus reducing the value of art? I approach this problem phenomenologically, utilizing a Heideggerian analysis of both art and technology in order to understand the two independently. From there, I examine art as mediated through technology, relying on Walter Benjamin's essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" (1935). Through this, I conclude that while Heidegger's concerns relating to that of technology are justifiable, they are not completely applicable to the work of art, and as such, the value of art and the artist can be saved.Accessibility Statement
