The Effects of the Recreational Use of Marijuana On The SUNY Purchase College Campus

Abstract

I ask whether the recreational use of weed is a detriment or a benefit to our SUNY Purchase student body. The essay not only describes the benefits potentially derived from weed in our case, but also the detriments. In terms of benefits, I display how weed can benefit some of our lives socially and creatively. Certainly important for people at an art school. To add on, I display how weed can be a substitute for harder drugs, improve common health problems, and can be great racially if it was fully decriminalized. To combat this I mention the negative repurcussions where weed has decreased IQ in some pot smoking individuals becoming a hindrance to their cognitive potential. I also mention how weed can damage our lungs, impair machine use, become a gateway drug due to accessibility and become a hindrance to our productivity. I then explain my answer whether I believe weed should or should not be recreationally legal on campus. I believe weed shouldn't be legal recreationally on campus. I believe the intentions many students go to college includes receiving a better occupation after and improving their learning. In terms of the ladder weed has negatively affected the cognitive ability of some students on campus, possibly affecting their potential. Another reason is addiction. Too much of almost anything is bad. Also, I say no because weed can create a persona that may be disliked by the parents of students attending the college. Therefore, it may decrease enrollment due to the fact that many parents have a lot of control over what school their kid attends. I mention the information I found where people of a sexual minority have correlated to consuming pot more frequently then straight people. We are very LGBTQ friendly here, therefore risking this correlation may not be the way to go. All our regulations on weed should stay in my opinion. I did this project because there are so many creatively beautiful and great people on our campus. Some of them use weed to the point where they spend thousands of their hard earned money on the soft drug. The skeptic in me asks internally whether this is a positive or negative aspect of our campus culture. My podcasts discussed these effects of marijuana and more. However the paper includes the information that is most relevant to my research question. I did this project because there are so many creatively beautiful and great people on our campus.
