Abstract
The horror genre has built itself upon years of societal and individual anxieties. With this level of self-awareness, it had almost always managed to be ahead of the curve, even when concepts/tropes eventually became stale. By considering horror’s relationship with current events and reinvention, I became interested in looking into the state of horror filmmaking during the COVID-19 Pandemic. I narrowed my focus down to three recent projects: Jane Schoenbrun’s "We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2021)", Ti West’s "Pearl (2022)", and Kyle Edward Ball’s "Skinamarink (2023)". In the midst of the WGA strike and the growing toxicity of the Hollywood Industry, the open collaboritive process within all these films have are fascinating and ultimately hold the key in conceptualizing where the new cycle of horror may take us.
