Since Donald Trump rose to prominence in the U.S. political landscape through his 2016 presidential campaign and election, the U.S. has been a host to a series of increasingly fascist movements and policies. This study seeks to interrogate the communication between Trump and the far-right to reveal how Trump played a vital role in the political violence seen by the far-right during his presidency. Through an analysis of social media accounts belonging to both Trump and members of the far-right, the research reveals that Trump and the far-right participated in a relationship where Trump created space for the far-right to feel emboldened to demonstrate for acts of political violence as seen in the Unite the Right rally. Following this, Trump later mobilized the base he knew to be capable of political violence to the events seen on the January 6th U.S. Capitol insurrection.Accessibility Statement
