Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: El Jefe and Christopher Columbus left a traumatic mark on the Haitian/ Dominican island. Explaining how this suffering happened. In addition, they prolonged the suffering of the island's Black population.
Objective: The research aims to see how Afro Latinos are treated in different aspects & how treatment in modern times mirrors the past, explaining the root of the colorism issue, which is self-love.
Design and Method: The research method is based on choosing articles that speak about the main issues in the Afro Latin community, dissecting the information provided. Most of the data is from articles on the internet. The pieces that were made are from 2013-2021. Topics from history, movements, entertainment, personal experiences, movies, and beauty all have their differences. Still, the standard-issue is how Afro Latinos are being treated and how they treat themselves? The main research question is: In what ways can anti-blackness be changed to self-love in the Dominican community?
Results: The importance of this study is to show how Afro Latinos are being treated and realize that Anti Blackness originates from historical trauma and is a behavior that must be unlearned.
Conclusion: Some Dominicans are Anti-Black and don't face their internal issues head-on. All the problems on the island between Haitians and the Dominicans stem from an internal problem and, from someone who lacks concern for black people—seeing how people in the industry do their research on Black people—explaining how Black beauty isn't seen as the leading standard in society. This study concludes how personal discovery changes someone and how Black people can uncover new ways to love themselves.
