Abstract
As I approached the end of the first semester of my MFA at Purchase College, a question entered my mind: It's 2017, not 1917, why am I painting naked women? The nude figures I depicted up until this point were manipulated and distorted to signify my feelings of being treated like an object. However, I realized my subject matter mimicked the same depictions of women that perpetuated the problem of objectification. I knew I wanted to continue to address the issue of sexism, but I needed a different subject matter.
This thesis traces my quest for new motif by outlining my key research findings and the paintings, drawings, and animations I made while studying at Purchase College. As I sought a resolution to my dilemma of visual representation, I evolved my understanding of feminist theory and expanded my awareness of the structures sustaining sexism in American culture.
