Abstract
Calamity Jane is typically portrayed as a gun-slinging, rowdy, and cussing woman of the west. She defied gender stereotypes of the 19th century United States and shows one unique way some women faced challenges of the West faced. This paper examines Calamity Jane's life, her interactions with Wild Bill Hickok, and her portrayal during her lifetimes and in the 20th-century media.
