Abstract
This project focuses on the creation of a digital artifact in the form of an educational video game
intended to teach elementary aged school children fundamental concepts in mathematics. The
majority of currently available math education games either simply present rapid fire math
problems to the player with little to no gameplay beyond entering in answers, or they focus far
too much on being a video game to the detriment of their educational value. In either case, the
games universally fail to utilize any of the commonly accepted visual aids needed to teach the
student the core concepts behind simple addition and subtraction. For the development of my
game, research will be conducted into the commonly accepted pedagogy in use by educators
today, into the basics of game and UI design with a focus on children as the target audience, and
lessons learned from an investigation into the state of currently available educational video
games.
