Abstract
This project focuses on the creation of a digital artifact in the form of an educational video game intended to teach elementary aged school children fundamental concepts in mathematics. The majority of currently available math education games either simply present rapid fire math problems to the player with little to no gameplay beyond entering in answers, or they focus far too much on being a video game to the detriment of their educational value. In either case, the games universally fail to utilize any of the commonly accepted visual aids needed to teach the student the core concepts behind simple addition and subtraction. For the development of my game, research will be conducted into the commonly accepted pedagogy in use by educators today, into the basics of game and UI design with a focus on children as the target audience, and lessons learned from an investigation into the state of currently available educational video games. My finished game, MathWizard is playable in a browser at this link: https://petedawes.itch.io/mathwizard
