Abstract
In this Senior Project, I focus on Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre, specifically examining Jane’s relationship with the idea of beauty in her society in order to explore how Jane is both a figure of female independence and a source of female repression. I read Jane’s dual function in the novel, as both character and narrator, and how this relates to Jane's failure to see patriarchal confinement beyond the oppression of herself.
